Techno-Economic Assessment of Residential Heat Pump Integrated with Thermal Energy Storage

Phase change material (PCM)-based thermal energy storage (TES) can provide and cost savings peak demand reduction benefits for grid-interactive residential buildings. Researchers established that these vary greatly depending on the PCM phase temperature (PCT), total TES capacity, system configuration location climate of building. In this study, preliminary techno-economic performance is reported a novel heat pump (HP)-integrated using an idealized approach. A simplified HP-TES was modeled 1 year space heating cooling loads building in three different climates United States. The vapor compression HP modified to integrate with TES, all transfer from mediated by HP. single used cooling, PCT capacity were varied observe their effects building’s consumption, load shifting savings. maximum electric utility achieved at 30 °C New York City 20 Houston Birmingham. Peak consumption Houston, City, Birmingham reduced 47%, 53%, 70%, respectively, time-of-use schedule. 170 MJ allowed shift on-peak off-peak hours, diminishing returns once equaled daily experienced during most extreme ambient conditions.
